Since its debut in 1997, fans have kept the franchise alive through replay sessions, livestreams, and an unwavering belief that Pablo Sanchez is the greatest athlete of all time. No notes.
Working closely with the Backyard Sports team, we developed a story built around a single play at the iconic Steele Stadium. As Pablo attempts an infield home run, every base becomes its own adventure, giving us the perfect way to reintroduce Kenny Kawaguchi, Achmed Khan, Stephanie Morgan, Kiesha Phillips, and the rest of the game’s beloved cast in fully realized 3D.
It may be just one play in a backyard game, but to the kids, it’s everything. That contrast became the heart of the cinematic. Every base, every reaction, and even one unexpected hot dog detour was treated with total conviction. If the moment matters to them, it matters to us.
Rebuilding an Icon.
We started with game-ready assets and worked hand in glove with the Backyard Sports team to make sure every character and corner of Steele Stadium felt unmistakably true to the game. From there, we looked for every opportunity to push the fidelity beyond the limits of the game engine. Characters were re-rigged for more expressive performances, textures were rebuilt in higher resolution, materials were refined, and every animation was given the full big-league treatment.
From the smallest reaction to the dust, light, and chaos of the stadium, every detail got an upgrade without sanding away the weird, scrappy charm that made these kids legends.
